Demián Flores Cortés (Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca; 1971) is a Mexican visual artist. Flores is probably best known for incorporating Mexican folkloric themes into his work, for example his use of wrestling motifs in his series Arena México.[1] In recent years, Flores has focused more on Oaxaca's political situation, as evidenced by his 2008 series Welcome To Oaxaca.[2]
He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, where he graduated with honors.
He has had exhibitions in Cuba, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Germany, France, the Netherlands, the United States, the United Kingdom, as well as numerous exhibitions in his native Mexico.
In 2008, Flores founded the Taller Gráfica Actual in Oaxaca, a cooperative/educational space dedicated to the promotion and investigation of the graphic arts. He is also co-director of Zegache Talleres Comunitarios, a project dedicated to restoring artifacts from the church in the town of Santa Ana Zegache, Oaxaca. He is also founder and creative director of La Curtiduría art gallery in Oaxaca, which opened in 2006.
